A New Hotel in Burgundy for Wine Lovers
At our most recent meeting of The Miles Raymond Society, one of our members suggested that we take our passion far beyond The Bar at The Park and organise a wine trip somewhere in Europe. We love the passion, and while organising such logistics is currently somewhat daunting, it remains top of mind.
And on that note, we recently experienced a peerless new hotel in Pommard that some of you Burgundy lovers might want to visit at the next available opportunity.
Château la Commaraine, Pommard
Château la Commaraine only opened in June, but this remarkable estate nestled in nine acres of Premier Cru vineyards is already the talk of the wine world.
Even those on the wagon will adore its idyllic spa (complete with a sauna and cold plunge of dreams) and two restaurants (Le Clos, a more casual and yet flawless brasserie, and Le VIII, which is jonesing for Michelin designation).
The History of Château la Commaraine
But the thing to discuss here is really the wine; whose history dates to the 12th century.
Originally among the fiefdoms of the Dukes of Burgundy, it was gifted to the knight Jean de Pommard in 1193. Over the centuries, generations of winemakers made their mark here, and the bottles were first formally judged by none other than Thomas Jefferson, who visited the château in 1787 and declared them to be “of excellent quality.”
